Garlic Knots

I love garlic knots. You know, those chewy little bits of pizza dough tied up all perfect with garlic and butter in every little nook and cranny. They taste so good, but I hate the price. Around here, the pizza shops charge $3.95 for 4 of them. That's crazy! For some dough that costs them like 2 cents to make with some garlic and butter thrown on top?? No, no no, it's definitely time to make my own.

Garlic Knots

What I use:

  • pizza dough (homemade, store-bought, or from your favorite pizza shop - I used the dough leftover from my Garlic Bread Spaghetti Calzones)
  • melted butter
  • garlic salt
  • garlic powder
  • minced garlic, optional

How I do it:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

1. Roll out your dough to less than 1/4 inch thick.

2. Slice it into long strips, almost 1 inch wide.

3. Tie each strip into a regular knot.

4. Lay the knots out on a foil-lined baking coated with cooking spray.

5. Brush melted butter generously over each one. Sprinkle with the garlic salt, then the garlic powder. You must do it in this order - if you do it backwards, the powder will cover all the butter and the garlic salt won't have anything to stick to. Trust me on this one.

Feel free to spread a little minced garlic on the knots - that is what the pizza shops around here do.

This is what they look like before you pop them in the oven.

6. Bake the knots for about 10 minutes, until they are golden brown.

The family says:

  • K didn't want one - he was full because he ate his whole garlic-bread spaghetti calzone.
  • Andrew said they were a little better than the ones from the pizza shop.
  • I thought they tasted just like the ones we always order, which makes sense considering it was their dough we used. The best part? When we asked the owner for some dough, he refused to charge us for it - he insisted on giving it to us for free.   :-)
